It seems the Psalmist has been overwhelmed in great grief. Through whatever hardship the Psalmist was going through, he made a decision to follow the Lord and was going to stick with that decision. For that decision to stay in the middle of his difficult circumstances, he needed God to help his soul continue down the path of truth.
